The student handshake phase is a digital handshake designed to build relationships among project participants, who many live in diverse areas, embrace different cultures, or speak different languages. The digital handshake could be an exchange of videos, emails, Skype calls (or any other VOIP), or a Voice Thread. These asynchronous tools allow students to break the ice and start learning together without being in the same room at the same time.
Ideas taken from Boss, S., & Krauss, J. (2014). Reinventing project-based learning: Your field guide to real-world projects in the digital age.

To complete your student handshake, please consider the following:
  • What is a handshake and why is it important?
  • Why students at this age level or adults need to create a handshake
  • The handshake design your class will/has created - be specific
  • Further reflections as to what this handshake could be used for within the curriculum (once it is made), or in the context of a future live meeting
  • IF you have time and motivation we would love to see live examples of the handshake you design!

Flattening classrooms, engaging minds: Move to global collaboration one step at a time.
has several sections focusing on the digital handshake.
