Description of this Heartbreak

Suicide prevention is an umbrella term for the collective efforts of local citizen organizations, mental health practitioners, and related professionals to reduce the incidence of suicide. Many people jump off of the Golden Gate Bridge to their deaths every year. There are many suicide hotlines you can call.

Why does this break your heart?

For the most part, people get suicidal because they are in severe despair brought on by one disorder or the other - depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, drug abuse, etc.

I'll touch particularly on depression. Depression is not merely being sad, as many of us seem to think. It may often (not always) be brought on by an unfortunate event in a person's life. But without the right support and enlightenment, it can become so severe that the person no longer reasons rationally and truly believes that all hope is gone. Suicide victims get to a point where they actually do not see any other way out of the abyss in which they find themselves.
Suicide seems like something that could be prevented easier than we think. Sometimes a little love and attention is all we need. In the song "How to Save a Life" by The Fray, it talks about a boy who was struggling. His family's way of approaching him was by saying "If you don't stop taking drugs and cutting yourself we won't talk to you anymore" and that was a terrible way. He was losing friends and just needed support. All we need to do is open our eyes. Is that so hard? - John Dean WHS

This breaks my heart because I know what it is like to be suicidal and be so depressed, it is very upsetting. Once I have a family friend commit suicide and it was absolutely terrible, my mother was devastated and so was I, once I had a friend that was so depressed she almost killed herself but I walked in on her and that is something that haunts me still to this day. I will never forget it I was so hurt and upset that she didn’t come and talk to me and I absolutely hated that I wasn’t enough friend to help her. – Kristen, FHS

This breaks my heart because I think that everyone should live. They might not know that someone really does care about them. I think that they are acting on their emotions and your emotions can mess up your reasoning. Losing a life isn't a little thing. - Dawson, WHS

This breaks my heart to see that over 150 Americans die due to suicidal deaths also many children and adults don't understand how they present their emotions, so they kill themselves. People who have died probably have regretted making that life decision, but by stopping it, it will save a life and regain gain a life for those who have the same problem. Also, the younger family or friend members might be influenced by the person who has the suicidal thoughts which can cause more deaths, but by preventing it we can make a change. Many people who died due to suicidal causes was caused by depression, mental, illness, and drug usage, by making a stop to suicidal accidents could give a child or adult a life to live. By using this program it would provide joy and support, for those who are in need. Your life matters, but how do we help other lives? (SydneyRCA)

This breaks my heart because people who commit suicide are destroying the chances of things getting better. They have families and friends who will miss them. Nothing will ever be the same without them. It will never get better for them. Suicide also leaves other people depressed which can lead to them committing suicide too. There's no grief like that of having a son, younger sister, mother, or best friend taking their life because of their problems and you could have prevented it. You could have noticed, but you didn't. This is what goes through the minds of friends and loved ones. Suicide will never have a happy ending, and we need to work hard to prevent it. -Sam FBS

I understand life can be hard sometimes but it can get better. I believe some don't believe others will help and that's why I joined this group. I want those in pain to understand someone out there will help out. Plus I had a buddy one time that was thinking about suicide and he is only 14 but he asked to move in with another family member and he's fine now, but it really pained me inside worrying about him. I didn't like the urgency and I don't want others to feel the same-Ross DMS

Why should other people care about this heartbreak?

World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10, 2016. We need to be aware of this every day of the year. The death of famous comedian Robin Williams, on August 11th of 2014, really shook the world. His death, along with the death of many others, got the attention of people and made us realize that suicide is something we need to prevent. If we, as a country, a planet, a whole population, had realized the importance of suicide and given it the severe attention it requires, who knows; maybe we could have saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of those who felt alone. The lives of Kurt Cobain, Chris Benoit, Tony Scott, and many others. -Sam FBS and other

There are approximately 322,255,715 citizens in the United States of America. Every year 38,000 of us die due to suicide, but this can be prevented. Americans should be made aware of he current situation in order for them to look to their own communities for teens and young adults who are contemplating taking their lives from themselves. We all have a future and a purpose on this Earth, and we should live it to the fullest. People should pay attention and put thought attention to this trending fatality because only they can make a difference. There is so much to live for why not stay and experience it? Love, friendship, destiny, intelligence, innovation and compassion are all aspects of life given to each of us. Whether you take those opportunities and build your life's foundation based on them is all up to you. -Olivia RCA
